The Government of India is taking necessary steps to launch its first blockchain project with tamperproof digital degree certificates. The government is aiming to provide degree certificates which are tamper proof, starting with the students who are to graduate in 2019.

The blockchain can be defined as a storage space or a digital ledger which is collectively run by a network of computers (nodes). It is similar to an electronic record book where all the main parties have equal access. It is very secure as the data stored in it can’t be modified by a single person alone. To make some changes or modifications in a once-made entry, every other party will have to agree, and the history of the changes made will also be visible to all the parties.

Within a short time, digital certificates of all degrees will be issued through IndiaChain, the countries blockchain tech-based solution. To do so, first, the trails will be conducted in the IIT Bombay and colleges which comes under the Delhi University. (Which comes under Niti Aayog – policy think tank of Govt. of India). As soon as the trails are completed, the blockchain project will be implemented on a full scale.

Why do we need digital certificates?

A large number of cases regarding the production of fake certificates have caused companies to spend an amount of money for conducting the background checks of the potential employees. This cost can be very high if an organization has plans to hire a large number of people.

On the other side, getting fake certificates is very simple in India. Many cases have been reported, people arrested and even Universities have been shut down because of this problem.

The implementation of blockchain technology can put an end to all the fraud and tamper activities regarding college certificates.

Blockchain technology – Expansion

In addition to certificates, IndiaChain also has plans to expand this project to the areas of health records, benefit distribution, land titles and digital identity. Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have shown great interest to implement the blockchain technology at a state level and in sectors like power distribution, land titles, insurance, health records and more.

Blockchain aims at maximizing efficiency, reducing fraud and giving a secure storage base. Given the large numbers of students graduating every year and a number of different degree colleges, shifting to digital certificates could improve the standards of the graduates as well as avoid the problems of fake certificates.
