China’s Food Market Embraces Blockchain to Track and Trace Products!

A regional supervisor of one of China’s food markets has declared a farm product traceability platform based on blockchain, big data, AI, and cloud computing told RFID World. The platform utilized by the Guangzhou Municipality’s Market Supervision Bureau intends to control the movement of food products and allow better market control for the management to assure food safety.

Guangzhou is the capital of the Guangdong province in China and has earlier published various food safety breaches. Although food supervisors maintain stringent surveillance on markets, it is not materially possible to check the quality of every packaged food and other products. Recently, the food traceability platform comprises 8,018 businesses in 90 agricultural markets over the city.

The traceability platform collects production data, including linking to the farm, aspects of the farmer, how and when the produce was harvested. The next step is filing the inspection and certification aspects of the agricultural produce.

“This set of traceability system uses blockchain technology to upload information such as market access, daily inspection and supervision, law enforcement by merchants, market operators, and regulatory authorities to the blockchain,” a representative of the Guangzhou Municipal Market Supervision Bureau told RFID World. “The data automatically generates an electronic label, which is equivalent to the data uploaded by each principal responsible person’s official seal.”

The blockchain food traceability platform intends to enhance food safety in the region by operating collectively with market operators, regulatory authorities, merchants and traders, and customers. The blockchain serves as an immutable ledger for the production and inspection data of the farm produce. Meantime, AI is being employed to support the authenticity bills presented by the market operators and traders. If the system identifies an aberration, food supervisors are notified to conduct proper inspections.

The report stated about 95% of traders, and other participants listed their activities daily, while 5% of the total daily bills were discovered to have flaws and irregularities. As of now, about 8,000 merchants are utilizing the platform, which has registered 708,000 purchase orders and 4 million sales orders.

The Huangsha Aquatic Products Market was the first to pilot the blockchain food traceability system for enhancing its supply chain management. The platform has been in progress since 2017.

Blockchain has facilitated remote supervision of food products marketed in Guangzhou markets. While assuring mediocre products don’t reach the counters, the blockchain traceability system can also help clear recalls.

While, the blockchain solution enables customers to observe traceability data like sales documents, sampling information, stall qualifications, and regulatory records. Customers can register complaints against merchants and traders utilizing the platform, which will also aid in preserving their consumer rights by an online process.

Earlier, Walmart China and Bright Foods have started blockchain food traceability systems in the nation. Subsequently, the IBM Food Trust is one of the highest-profile blockchain initiatives with members around the world.
