Ethereum Takes Step Forward in Scaling Layer-2 Rollups, Highlights Need for Unified Infrastructure

During the recent ETHGlobal conference in London, Avail co-founder Anurag Arjun emphasized the importance of neutral third-party players in developing unified infrastructure for Ethereum’s layer-2 rollups. Arjun, who previously co-founded Polygon, now focuses on building rollup-agnostic infrastructure through Avail.

Arjun’s journey began with Polygon’s shift towards aligning with Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap. Recognizing the need for scalable data availability, Arjun and his team developed a technology called data sampling, akin to Ethereum’s sharding roadmap. However, with Ethereum’s full danksharding functionality still years away, Arjun stresses the urgency for rollups to efficiently verify transactions without delay.

The current Ethereum user experience involves navigating between different rollups for fund bridging or transfers, resulting in fragmentation. Arjun envisions a unified rollup ecosystem akin to Solana’s consolidated approach. He advocates for a credible, neutral third party to coordinate integration between diverse rollups, similar to Avail Nexus’ aim of standardizing integration.

Avail’s technology, like Polygon’s Aggregation layer, aggregates proofs from various rollups to create a coordinated rollup, fostering ecosystem-wide cohesion. Arjun believes the infrastructure to unite rollups must be developed either by the Ethereum Foundation or by a neutral third party outside the rollup business.

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, echoed similar sentiments at the ETHGlobal conference, stressing the importance of aligning decentralized applications with Ethereum’s rollup-enabled functionality. This collective effort reflects the ecosystem’s forward-thinking approach to addressing future challenges.
