This month, South Korean telecom operators will demonstrate Metaverse and AI breakthroughs.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2022, South Korean Telecom (SKT) will launch a wide range of Metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI), and virtual reality (VR) experiences.

Updates to several of SKT’s technologies will be unveiled at the event, including the company’s Ifland Metaverse platform, Jump Studio, a mixed reality (MR) volumetric video capture stage, and Sapeon, Korea’s first AI semiconductor chip.

It also intends to unveil a new intelligent infrastructure for UAM and public transit, as well as a hypothetical “4D” Metaverse.

Following the company’s successful deployment of 5G technology in 2019, SKT Chief Executive Ryu Young-Sang will attend the event to highlight his company’s latest technology endeavors.

According to the CEO“Since commercializing the 5G service in 2019, we have successfully introduced diverse services and technologies including Ifland, AI semiconductor and quantum cryptography technologies that brought revolutionary changes to the market”

SKT will also bring nine South Korean companies to the MWC startup expo floor. They will present eleven ideas that use new extended reality (XR) technologies to address social concerns and connect global organizations with the same ethical aims.

What Will SKT Present?

Ifland, a new Metaverse platform geared at younger demographics to stimulate virtual events and remote play, was unveiled last year by South Korea’s 5G leader. Up to 18 virtual meeting rooms, extensive avatar customization, and an easy-to-use user interface are all available on the platform.

SKT will now premiere a version of Ifland on a range of VR headsets at MWC Barcelona 2022 and use a Jump Studio volumetric capture stage to film a K-pop concert for Ifland users. SKT will also demonstrate its AI semiconductor chip Sapeon, which enables rapid data transfer at a fraction of the cost and energy of other graphical processing units (GPU).

SKT announced last month at the Consumer Electronics Show 2022 (CES) that their Sapeon AI processor consumes around 20% less power, has 1.5 times faster transfer speeds, and is 50% cheaper to create than other GPUs.

SKT developed and funded the initiative in collaboration with SK Hynix and SK Square, with a total investment of USD 41.5 million.

SKT also intends to reveal additional information about its UAM Team Korea collaboration with Korea Airports Corporation, Hanwha Systems, and the Korea Transport Institute. For South Korea’s UAM, the alliance will introduce an integrated communications network concept that encompasses public transportation options.

Finally, the Seoul-based company will tease an elusive ‘4D Metaverse,’ transporting customers on an extended robotic arm on an immersive journey. Barcelona 2022 Mobile World Congress MWC Barcelona is a meeting place for technology companies and trailblazers to discuss the most up-to-date information on telecoms technology.

The event will feature groundbreaking projects that dramatically improve consumer and enterprise-grade distant communications. Global mobile operators, device makers, technology providers, suppliers, and content owners are expected to attend. The venue for the event is the Fira Gran Via Conference Centre in Barcelona, Spain, from February 28 to March 3, and anyone interested in learning more or purchasing tickets can do so here.
