The United States Department of Defense(DoD) is looking for blockchain solutions to ensure cybersecurity as part of its digital modernization strategy.

They plan to publish strategies for blockchain technology within 4 years, as announced on July 12, titled “DoD Digital Modernization Strategy: DoD Information Resource Management Strategic Plan FY19–23.”

DoD’s research branch, DARPA (Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency) is currently developing two detailed blockchain projects which focus on cybersecurity, according to their report.

First, DARPA is testing blockchain to improvise and develop a new transaction and communication platform. The objectives of this platform were stated to include communication between headquarters and units, as well as intelligence officers and the Pentagon.

Second, DARPA aims at creating a code that is “unhackable” with blockchain to ensure complete security, stressing on blockchain’s capability to gather information about those who attempt to hack into databases.

DARPA’s blockchain workshop

As reported by Cointelegraph, DARPAhad announced its intentions onholdinga two-day blockchain workshop in February. DARPA was particularly interested in examining consensus protocolswithout permission. The organization also stated that there were potential use cases for blockchain in data storing, saying:

“Technologies for distributed consensus protocols have been revolutionized by their prominent role in cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies. These technologies have dramatic implications for the security and resilience of critical data storage and computation tasks, including for the Department of Defense.”

DoD officials analyzed how blockchain technology could help emergencies responses in critical situations in a presentation hosted in December 2018, by the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Continuous Process Improvement.
