In the crypto and blockchain business, play-to-earn(P2E) gaming is an intriguing vertical. While most developers work with Ethereum or other EVM-compatible networks, Solana has also piqued their curiosity. Even if Solana isn’t necessarily their first pick, specific characteristics of this network appeal to game creators.

On Solana, there is play-to-earn gaming.

According to DAppRadar’s rankings, the market for play-to-earn gaming on Solana is now relatively limited. Most developers prefer various blockchains that may make things easier. In this regard, Ethereum, BNB Chain, and others remain popular choices. On the other hand, Solana takes a radically different approach to smart contracts.

Tillmann, the CTO of the Plutonians, adds:

“Solana was not the team’s first blockchain experience, and we had some internal pushback because EVM is a well-worn path for a lot of devs, but Solana was the first time that made us pay attention and think, hey, this could support the kind of gameplay and experiences that we want to do,” says the team.

As a result, a few play-to-earn games are being developed on the Solana blockchain. According to the rankings, with barely 2,300 people, SolaJump is the most popular game. The game generates $1.71 million in revenue, which is more than adequate at this early point in the development of blockchain gaming. New initiatives such as NextMoon, Wolf Game for Solana, RaceFi, and others will face a challenging task in attracting customers.

Oren Langberg, CMO of MonkeyLeague, discusses his team’s strategy:

“A game’s art and design, game mechanics and design, and economy are all variables that contribute to its engagement and attraction. Not only is MonkeyLeague a super-fun arcade game showing the world’s most popular sport, soccer, and the game’s nature appeals to a wide variety of gamers, from hardcore to casual, but the game’s development team has over 100 years of combined experience in game art, mechanics, and economy.”

Technical Advantages Are Priceless

For various reasons, game developers are drawn to Solana to create P2E games. For starters, the network offers development flexibility that other ecosystems may not now provide. The network also has a fast throughput and minimal transaction costs, beneficial to both developers and gamers. When making their next blockchain game, developers must obtain flexibility and independence.

One may argue that the elements Solana brings to the table are in line with the expectations of the game. Checking the correct boxes on the technological side lays the groundwork for attracting additional game developers and players. However, it is still necessary to attract mainstream users, which might be difficult. Users in the mainstream seek exciting gaming experiences without worrying about the underlying technologies. P2E gamers are currently more concerned with incentives than games’ quality.

Tillmann had this to say about the “divide”:

“The two groups don’t always agree, but they’re crucial.” It’s from that nexus in the center, where gamers are still looking for better gameplay experiences while becoming crypto literate and developing new expectations surrounding their digital asset ownership. This group of people in the middle, I believe, will come to determine what those concepts represent and how the mainstream will adopt them. Of course, Solana is a terrific place to start for games aiming to remove friction from the blockchain side.”

Oren Langberg shares this sentiment, identifying the traditional “missing piece” as construction projects with a much larger appeal. The key to unlocking the gates and bringing mainstream players to blockchain gaming on Solana is striking a mix between top-tier games, competitiveness, prizes, ease of play, and strategic collaborations.

Beyond Rewards: Advancing P2E Gaming

Many players are attracted to play-to-ear gaming because of the prizes available. The non-fungible tokens exist for all in-game assets, allowing layers to convert them to real money. These rewards are a mechanism to recoup an original investment or develop a cash stream for the most part. However, it’s critical to make blockchain gaming more than money and incentives.

Oren Langberg continues:

“People have wasted money on games for years with no meaningful reward. The first step is for them to realize there is a chance to play high-quality enjoyable games and get paid for it. There is no better match between blockchain and gaming, and as blockchain popularity grows, so will the number of traditional gamers who switch to cryptocurrency. For many, cryptocurrency remains perplexing, frightening, and too volatile.”

Tillmann agrees, stating that it will all come down to education. Showing mainstream consumers the benefits of play-to-earn games [on Solana] is one method of teaching them. Using influencers and content creators to help spread the word about what these games are about and how they are changing the gaming scene is an integral part of the process. Gamers must also learn to love the gaming environments where they spend weeks or months of their lives.

“Many websites from the 1990s that would have been historically significant have now been lost forever… So persistent states are often just as essential in externalized memory as physical places and objects, especially in worlds and surroundings that we investigate. Being able to return to levels and planets regardless of whether or not a single gaming company paid their electricity bill that week. As these words and experiences become a larger part of our lives, this is a beneficial asset.”

Final Thoughts

While game makers have a variety of blockchains to choose from, it appears that Solana is gaining traction. The ecosystem’s appealing characteristics are a huge draw. Furthermore, Solana and its ecosystem are being developed by a strong team, which can contribute to the long-term viability of play-to-earn gaming.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other legacy chains will always have a certain appeal. They may, however, lack the necessary advantages and features to make blockchain gaming a sustainable business. Those facing this new frontier want the tools and functionality they need right away, making Solana a viable option. Game makers cannot afford to wait for such changes, as they may never arrive.
