Former Ripple engineering leader to accelerate innovation, decentralization, and real-world scale

The Algorand Foundation announced the appointment of Nikolaos Bougalis as its new Chief Technology Officer. Bougalis brings deep experience in blockchain, cryptography, and security. Notably, he spent nearly a decade at Ripple, where he led engineering teams responsible for the open-source XRP Ledger.

Bougalis joins the Foundation at a critical inflection point for the Algorand ecosystem and the broader blockchain industry. Algorand released its 2025 technical roadmap in July, focused on four strategic pillars: Web3 core values, mainstream adoption, high-potential use cases, and bleeding edge technology. Bougalis will focus on leading the engineering team and collaborating with Algorand Technologies to drive the roadmap.

“Nik brings a wealth of experience in distributed systems, cryptography, and blockchain, as well as a demonstrated ability to foster collaborative development communities and build consensus across diverse technical and non-technical teams,” said Staci Warden, CEO of the Algorand Foundation. “He will help us double down on decentralization, performance, and security, solidifying Algorand’s position as the blockchain of choice for enterprise-scale blockchain applications.”

Bougalis will be based in the United States and play a key role in Algorand’s move back to the U.S. He will support Algorand’s position as the blockchain of choice for U.S. enterprises and institutions seeking secure, compliant, and scalable infrastructure. Bougalis’ expertise in enterprise security will further enhance Algorand’s leadership in privacy, quantum resilience, and scalability.

About Algorand

Algorand’s mission is to power a world where information has integrity and innovative ideas can scale. Launched in 2019, Algorand (ALGO) has grown into a vibrant ecosystem of developers, entrepreneurs, and enterprise partners. Its institutional-grade certainty, low fees, and instant finality appeal to the protocol’s millions of users, and developers appreciate the ability to use common programming languages like Python and Typescript.
